Teaching Fees

teaching fees: coins in front of a clock

The Western Australian Music Teachers’ Association sets out minimum recommended teaching fees for music teachers in private studios. These are reviewed annually for each WAMTA membership category by the WAMTA Council.

Peripatetic teachers can download our Guidelines for Peripatetic Teachers to gauge what fee range is typical in their situation.

WAMTA's recommended minimum rates for self-employed studio music teachers are:

202320242025
Accredited Teaching members$100 p/h$110 p/h$110 p/h
Teaching members$90 p/h$95 p/h$95 p/h
Provisional members$75 p/h$75 p/h$75 p/h
Student members$70 p/h$70 p/h$70 p/h

Please note that a variety of factors can affect teaching fees, including:

  • the teacher's qualifications and years of experience
  • areas of specialisation
  • provision of access to apps and resources that require subscription fees
  • whether the teacher travels to the student
  • whether the teacher is employed by a business they don't own and are provided with benefits such as paid leave and superannuation, and/or are provided with a teaching space and equipment; whether or not rent is paid for the space, and who takes care of the administration can factor into the fee
